Fireworks just a fizzer for fledgling spectators

In past years, Wild Life Sydney staff played recordings of simulated fireworks to prepare their animals for the pyrotechnic disturbance – a precaution no longer needed, said keeper Jess McCray.

Every second weekend since November there have been fireworks, so it [the simulation] does it for us, she said.

We used to have staff monitoring the animals overnight, but we could see there was nothing to worry about.

When the facility opened in September 2006, authorities suggested moving the native birds to a sound-proofed area which masked the boom of bursting firecrackers.

But a Department of Primary Industries spokesman said that idea was shelved after monitoring found that the animals were not affected.

At Taronga Zoo, animals treat the sound of fireworks as part of their seasonal change, keeper Mandy Everett, said.

You could liken the sound to a storm.

Because it happens fairly regularly, they get used to it. And theyve always got the option to stay in the exhibit or go inside to somewhere more quiet.

But while most of the zoos chimpanzees retire to their den before the 9pm display, the eldest of the troop, Lulu, has proven quite the party animal.

She has shown behaviours in the past where she will sit right on top of the climbing structure and watch [the fireworks] with interest, Ms Everett said.

She stays up for the midnight ones as well.

But the RSPCA has warned that domestic pets are not so adaptable and is preparing for a four-fold increase in the number of dogs arriving at its shelters in the days after New Years Eve.

The chief veterinarian, Magdoline Awad, said dogs have been known to jump fences and damage doors as they try to escape the noise.

A lot get out and end up being hit by cars, Dr Awad said.

According to Dr Awad, pets should be brought inside and kept in a dark, quiet room during the display, and owners should ensure their animals are microchipped in case they flee.
