On the lookout for barn owls

There is nothing more exhilarating  than watching a great winged barn own silently swoop through the mist of the early morning.

At that magical time, when the sky is still shrouded in sleep, the barn owl is out hunting.

These incredible birds are very shy and it is a lucky moment if you spot one.

The common barn owl, so-called to distinguish it from other barn owls, is one of a group of birds that are more widely distributed than any other. Sarah Burke remembered at X Games

ASPEN, Colo. — One week after the death of freeskiing icon Sarah Burke, her friends and former rivals held a candlelight vigil at the top of a darkened Buttermilk SuperPipe, then skied together to the base.

In addition to the somber halfpipe trip, ESPN aired a tribute Thursday night during the live Winter X Games broadcast to honor the late pioneer, who has been a constant subject of discussion in Aspen this week.

The 29-year-old Canadian, who would have been the defending champion in Saturdays SuperPipe finals, died Jan. 19, nine days after suffering an accident in the Park City, Utah, halfpipe.

Florida has had little trouble playing games on Thursdays and Saturdays

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Some of the Southeastern Conferences basketball coaches are a bit upset at the inequity of the leagues scheduling of Thursday-Saturday games over the past three seasons. Some schools — Florida in particular — have played with just one day of rest more than others.

Erving Walker, however, doesnt understand the angst.

Were young kids. We shouldnt be worn down with a day of rest, UFs senior point guard said. We got a day of rest Friday and we were ready to go today. We like to play.

Rabies discovered in northwest area

NW GUILFORD COUNTY A raccoon found on Buckingham Road in northwest Greensboro tested positive for rabies on Jan. 11 after it had come into contact with a dog.

This is the first confirmed case of rabies in 2012.

State law requires all domestic pets 4 months or older to be vaccinated against the potentially deadly virus. This includes pets who live indoors or in fenced areas because wild animals can get into these areas and attack domestic pets.

Having a pet vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself and your animals against rabies.

Should an infected animal come into contact with an unvaccinated domestic pet or one whose vaccinations are not up to date, the pet will...

Mortgage lenders should be better neighbors

By CARL SELPH

PANAMA CITY
Unfortunately, banks, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are still contributing significantly to the continued decline of housing prices through the ongoing deterioration of our neighborhoods and homeowners association communities. Anyone can drive down a street in a neighborhood of single-family homes and observe overgrown lawns, unkempt landscaping, houses in need of paint and repair.

With few exceptions, most of these unkempt properties are lender-owned and an aesthetic disgrace to the surrounding occupied homes. Too often, the foreclosed properties owned by banks, Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac become a haven for vagrants, drug addicts or homeless persons.

The...
